LGU+ and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Deliver Nameplates for 'Homes of Independence Patriots' Descendants'

[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] LG Uplus announced on the 15th that it installed ‘House Plaques for Descendants of Independence Patriots’ for descendants of independence patriots residing in Hawaii to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Korean immigration, in collaboration with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.

LG Uplus and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs donated 50 million KRW last year through Warm Companion and the Korean American Foundation Hawaii to be used for supporting descendants of independence patriots. The Korean American Foundation Hawaii produced and delivered 130 house plaques for descendants of independence patriots using part of the donation.

This project is part of LG Uplus’s annual Liberation Day campaign “Ordinary Days That Are Not Taken for Granted,” which has been conducted since 2020. Through this campaign, LG Uplus highlights independence activists who devoted themselves to Korea’s liberation but are not widely known.

Last year, LG Uplus developed a game-type content called ‘Aloha Independence RUN,’ which allows participants to experience the footsteps of independence activists who were active in Hawaii, and donated 815 KRW per participant. At that time, the MZ generation, including followers of LG Uplus’s SNS channels, actively participated, achieving the target amount within a week.

Hawaii is the region where Korean immigration first began, and about 5,000 early immigrants who worked on sugarcane plantations became a strong support for independence activists.

So far, house plaques have been installed at the homes of patriotic martyrs’ descendants such as Kim No-di, Hwang (Kang) Maria, Kwon Do-in, and Lee (Kwon) Hee-kyung. At the March 1st Movement commemoration ceremony held locally in Hawaii, plaques were delivered to a total of 70 households, including Robert Ahn, the grandson of patriot Ahn Chang-ho.

To mark the 120th anniversary of Korean immigration to the Americas, the Korean American Foundation plans to find more descendants of Hawaii independence activists and deliver plaques to a total of 130 households by August 15, Liberation Day. LG Uplus will continue to highlight independence activists and strengthen campaigns to promote the culture of honoring patriots this year as well.

Jung Hye-yoon, Head of Marketing Group (Executive Director) at LG Uplus, said, “It is meaningful to reflect together with our customers on the independence activists who dedicated themselves for our ordinary daily lives,” adding, “We will continue to strive to create various campaigns that can spread positive influence.”
