Business Leaders Visit Japan... Discussing Korea-Japan Economic Cooperation

On the 13th, the business community expects that business leaders such as Lee Jae-yong, Chairman of Samsung Electronics, Chey Tae-won, Chairman of SK Group, Chung Eui-sun, Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, and Koo Kwang-mo, Chairman of LG Group, will meet with Japanese businesspeople during President Yoon's visit to Japan to help thaw the frozen economic cooperation between Korea and Japan. Currently, Keidanren (Japan Business Federation), a Japanese business organization, and its Korean partner, the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI), are coordinating details such as the number of participants and agenda for holding a business roundtable on the 17th.

Vice chairmen of the FKI will also visit Japan to attend the meeting. The vice chairmen include Shin Dong-bin, Chairman of Lotte Group; Kim Yoon, Chairman of Samyang Holdings (Chairman of the Korea-Japan Economic Association); Park Jung-won, Chairman of Doosan Group; and Cho Hyun-joon, Chairman of Hyosung.

The business leaders are expected to discuss joint Korea-Japan projects not only at the Keidanren-FKI business roundtable but also through individual contacts with companies. Especially since this is President Yoon's first visit to Japan since taking office in May last year, it is anticipated that cooperation commitments that can ease the tense atmosphere between Korea and Japan economically will follow. Although Japan is Korea's fourth-largest export market and third-largest import partner, and is highly important in terms of trade and economic scale, it has been evaluated that there has been minimal cooperation at the presidential level in trade activities over the past decade.
