Makkeolli Tasting Event Held for Three Days from the 10th at Stores in the Byeolbit Sinsari Commercial Area

Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) and Seoul Credit Guarantee Foundation (Chairman Joo Cheolsu) have officially launched the makgeolli “Mark Holy Byeolbit Sinsari 7.0,” a signature product of the Byeolbit Sinsari commercial area, with online sales beginning at 11 AM on the 13th.

This makgeolli was developed through a partnership among Gwanak-gu, Seoul Credit Guarantee Foundation, and Holly Walker Co., Ltd. The district and foundation cover the costs of developing the specialty product, while Holly Walker pays a portion of the sales revenue to the district office.

The district reinvests in projects aimed at revitalizing the commercial area.

Since 2020, the district has been promoting the “Byeolbit Sinsari Commercial Area Renaissance Project” to revitalize the commercial zones around Seowon-dong shopping street near exits 3 and 4 of Sillim Station and the Shinwon Market area. This project supports the development of specialty menus and delivery options for individual stores and strives to create a signature product representing the entire commercial area.

Leveraging the commercial area's characteristic as a hub for diverse food offerings, makgeolli was selected as the specialty product. It pairs well with signature dishes such as Sillim-dong Baeksundae and has the advantage of being marketable nationwide through online sales.

The product, named “Mark Holy Byeolbit Sinsari 7.0,” features a subtle sweetness derived from premium rice varieties and a clean taste achieved by blending traditional nuruk and beer yeast in a special ratio.

The brand story is also intriguing. It imagines an American named “Mark Holy,” who, captivated by makgeolli during his travels in Korea, visits Byeolbit Sinsari in Gwanak-gu by chance, falls in love with the area, and releases a makgeolli bearing his name.

From the 10th, the district held a pop-up store for three days to celebrate the launch of “Mark Holy Byeolbit Sinsari 7.0,” featuring makgeolli tastings and various prize giveaways.

In particular, responding to the rise of “home drinking,” three meal kits?fermented skate salad, ox bone soup with rice cakes, and Sillim-dong Baeksundae?were developed in collaboration with participating stores to allow customers to enjoy popular side dishes at home.

About 500 visitors attended the pop-up store, praising the makgeolli with comments such as “The taste is hip,” “It pairs perfectly with sundae,” and “The flavor is clean.” The prepared meal kits also sold out completely, with all 150 sets purchased, receiving great enthusiasm.

From the 17th, a pop-up store will be held for three days at Seoul Forest in Seongsu-dong, the base of the makgeolli manufacturer Holly Water, to introduce the makgeolli to a wider audience. The district plans to expand marketing efforts by participating in nationwide liquor expos including its flagship festival, the Gang Gamchan Festival, and to explore various sales channels.

Park Junhee, Mayor of Gwanak-gu, said, “I am very pleased and honored that many people visited the pop-up store celebrating the launch of ‘Mark Holy Byeolbit Sinsari 7.0’ and gave positive feedback.” He added, “We will continue to make innovative product developments and diversify marketing efforts so that the makgeolli launch leads to increased sales in the Byeolbit Sinsari commercial area and revitalization of the local economy.”
