Operation of Special Wildfire Measures Period
Education on Wildfire Prevention for Community Leaders
Pohang City conducted a wildfire prevention campaign and safety education for community leaders on the 10th to prevent wildfires caused by careless handling of fire sources, such as the burning of agricultural residues, which account for 52% of wildfire occurrences during the 'Special Wildfire Prevention Period.'
On the 10th, Pohang City held a wildfire prevention campaign and safety education session for community leaders at the Culture and Arts Center.
This training emphasized that most wildfires occur due to careless handling of fire sources and requested strengthening wildfire prevention publicity in areas adjacent to forests. It also provided education on wildfire suppression techniques and safety measures to enable wildfire watchers and frontline responders to effectively manage incidents.
Currently, dry weather continues nationwide, leading to frequent wildfires. Since 60% of large wildfires in the past decade have occurred in March and April, the city is fully committed to wildfire prevention by operating the Wildfire Prevention Countermeasures Headquarters and maintaining an emergency duty system.
The city is actively implementing wildfire countermeasures, including a complete ban on burning near forest areas, fixed deployment of officials in vulnerable areas according to wildfire crisis alert levels, operation of a golden time system for wildfire suppression helicopters, and early deployment of helicopters from related agencies in case of wildfire outbreaks.
Additionally, wildfire suppression personnel have established safety measures by continuously monitoring sites using IoT cameras to ensure safety at wildfire scenes. To protect lives and property during wildfire spread, the city has prepared measures to promptly inform citizens of the situation and prioritize resident evacuation.
Deputy Mayor Kim Nam-il stated, “Please pay special attention to prohibiting the possession of fire sources in forests and handling fire sources near forest areas. In case a wildfire is caused by carelessness, we ask for your cooperation in immediately reporting it to the fire station or the city’s Greenery Division to enable initial suppression.”
