Actress Kim Sae-ron (23), who caused an accident while driving under the influence, faced backlash over a ‘hygiene controversy’ after attempting to appeal for a reduced sentence in court by citing ‘financial hardship.’
At the trial held on the 8th, Kim Sae-ron pleaded for leniency, stating, “As the head of a single-parent household supporting my family, not only I but also my family have been suffering from financial difficulties since the incident,” and added, “Due to my difficult economic situation, I make a living through part-time jobs.”
However, public reaction was cold. This was because Kim Sae-ron had previously showcased a ‘young and rich’ image by boasting about her expensive house and foreign luxury car.
Moreover, it was revealed that she had hired a former chief prosecutor turned representative lawyer from one of the top 10 domestic law firms for this trial. It was also reported that she retained a total of six lawyers?two from one major law firm and four from another?undermining her claim of ‘financial hardship.’
Amid this, on the 11th, Kim Sae-ron posted a photo proving she was working part-time at a famous coffee franchise, sparking a hygiene controversy. In trying to prove her financial difficulties, she encountered a new controversy.
In the photo, Kim Sae-ron is tying her hair while wearing sanitary gloves. Although she wore a mask at the counter, she was seen without a mask and with her hair loose while baking.
Netizens responded coldly with comments such as, “Won’t the store headquarters sue you?”, “Sales will drop,” and “Financial hardship but hired six lawyers. Either she’s stupid or this is just laughable.”
Her attempt to frame a part-time job, common among people in their twenties, as financial hardship also drew criticism. Various online communities were filled with comments like, “This is just a normal job for us, but she seems to think it’s what people in financial hardship do,” and “Everyone in their twenties does this.”
On the morning of May 18 last year, around 8 a.m., Kim Sae-ron was driving under the influence near Hakdong Intersection in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, when she crashed into a guardrail, street trees, and a transformer. The accident caused the transformer to malfunction, resulting in a power outage at nearby commercial buildings and traffic signals.
The police attempted to measure Kim Sae-ron’s blood alcohol concentration at the scene, but at her request, a blood test was conducted instead. The test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of about 0.2%, far exceeding the license cancellation limit of 0.08%.
