Wang Huning, the 4th-ranked member of the Chinese Communist Party and a member of the Standing Committee of the Central Political Bureau, has been elected as the chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), the highest advisory body.

According to the state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 10th, the CPPCC elected Wang Huning as the chairman of the 14th CPPCC National Committee at the plenary session held that day.

Wang Huning was the only member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Party to be listed in the 14th CPPCC National Committee announced in January. There were also speculations that he was being appointed as the CPPCC chairman.

Traditionally, the Chinese Communist Party assigns the top-ranked Standing Committee member of the Central Political Bureau as the President of the country, Chairman of the Central Military Commission, and General Secretary of the Party; the second-ranked as the Premier of the State Council; and the 3rd and 4th ranks as the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and the Chairman of the CPPCC, respectively.

The CPPCC is a policy advisory conference that gathers opinions before the Communist Party makes policy decisions. It is composed of representatives from the Communist Party and seven other political parties, various organizations, and ethnic minorities. It also handles Taiwan-related issues.

Wang Huning, known as "Xi Jinping's strategist," is an expert in international relations who became the youngest associate professor at Fudan University in Shanghai at the age of 30. During his study period in the United States in 1988, he wrote books criticizing American politics and society. After serving as the director of the Central Policy Research Office, a think tank responsible for political theory, policy, and document drafting for the Party's Political Bureau, for 15 years, he was promoted to the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau in 2017. He shaped the theoretical frameworks of former President Jiang Zemin's "Three Represents" and former President Hu Jintao's "Scientific Outlook on Development."

Meanwhile, Hu Chunhua, who was only considered a candidate for the Standing Committee of the Central Political Bureau at last year's Party Congress, was elected as the vice chairman of the CPPCC.
