Police Considering Awarding Commendation Letter
It was reported late by Yonhap News on the 10th that a man in his 50s who was driving on the highway while unconscious was safely rescued after another driver forcibly stopped his vehicle.
According to the Hwaseong Western Police Station in Gyeonggi Province, on the afternoon of the 7th, a 1-ton truck driven by a man in his 50s, Mr. A, was slowly driving in the first lane on the Bibong Maesong Expressway in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, repeatedly hitting the central divider.
The road where the accident occurred allows speeds up to 90 km/h, but at the time, it was dark and the truck was driving slowly without its hazard lights on, creating a very dangerous situation.
Mr. A’s truck reportedly did not change direction even on a curve. Despite other vehicles honking or flashing their high beams, the truck continued for about 1 km, scraping the wall, showing no particular reaction.
A driver in his 20s, Mr. B, who was following Mr. A’s truck, sensed that something was wrong. He attempted to stop Mr. A’s vehicle by pushing it from the right side with his own Avante car and simultaneously called 119 to report the emergency.
When he still could not stop Mr. A’s truck, Mr. B eventually overtook the vehicle and blocked it by positioning his car in front of Mr. A’s truck.
Mr. A was then transported to the hospital by paramedics who arrived shortly after and is currently reported to be in recovery. During the police investigation, Mr. A stated, "I think I lost consciousness due to fatigue while returning home after work."
Mr. B did not sustain any significant injuries, but his car’s side and rear were considerably damaged while blocking Mr. A’s truck.
Mr. B, who saved the truck driver and prevented a secondary accident, told the police, "I thought it would lead to a major accident, so I blocked the lane to stop the vehicle."
The police are considering awarding Mr. B a letter of appreciation.
