Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon announced that the 'Artist Opportunity Income,' which provides opportunities to all artists in the province, will soon be implemented.
On the 9th, Governor Kim stated on his social media (SNS), "The 'Artist Opportunity Income,' which is paid to artists residing in the province registered with the Artist Welfare Foundation and earning below 120% of the median income, will soon be implemented," emphasizing that "artistic activities create social value in themselves."
He added, "In 2011, an artist passed away alone. The last note left was asking, 'Can I get a little more rice or kimchi?'" He explained, "The purpose of the 'Artist Opportunity Income' is to support artists' creative work until they can receive fair compensation in the market, and this is the first policy to support artists without requiring a plan for artistic activities or post-verification."
He further said, "Today, we held a communication forum with artists in the province," and "artists from various fields and activities attended, and we shared diverse opinions from new perspectives that we had not previously considered."
Governor Kim expressed his expectations, saying, "'Artist Opportunity Income' is a newly created policy, and its experience and achievements will serve as a valuable lesson for implementing opportunity income in other fields such as for people with disabilities."
In particular, he promised, "Diversity is the power of art, and diversity is also Gyeonggi Province's greatest competitiveness," adding, "Gyeonggi Province will be a strong support for artists."
