Create Your Own Major... Pukyong National University Launches Student-Designed Majors Program

National Pukyong National University is officially operating a system where university students create their own majors that did not previously exist and receive double major degrees.

Pukyong National University added 12 new "Student-Designed Majors" to the 2023 academic curriculum.

A "Student-Designed Major" is a double major that students complete in addition to their primary major. While typical double majors involve completing an existing major, a "Student-Designed Major" allows students to design the curriculum themselves and complete a newly established major to earn a degree.

Following a pilot project in 2020 that proposed three majors as standard models, Pukyong National University first established and operated the "Media Tech Design Student-Designed Major" last year, which was designed directly by students.

This year, 12 majors requested by students were established, including Public Linguistics, Asia Regional (Japan) Diplomatic Convergence Studies, Foreign Affairs Administration, Marine and Fisheries Convergence Science, Creator Planning and Management, Biomedical Engineering, Sports Science Convergence, Education Design, Industry and Artificial Intelligence Convergence, Artificial Intelligence Video Engineering, Creative Convergence Applied Engineering, and Biomimicry and Artificial Intelligence, significantly expanding from last year.

"Student-Designed Majors" allow students to design curricula by integrating two or more major subjects, and since each student designs it according to their individual interests, it is characterized by the creation of unique majors that combine three or four different fields that did not previously exist.

The "Media Tech Design Student-Designed Major" established last year was created by integrating courses from three majors: Human ICT Convergence, Visual Design, and International Business Administration.

The "Creator Planning and Management Student-Designed Major" established this year integrates courses from Journalism and Information, Human ICT Convergence, and Business Administration majors, while the "Biomimicry and Artificial Intelligence Student-Designed Major" combines courses from Artificial Intelligence, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Human Bio Convergence majors.

Any student who designs a major or wishes to complete one can apply for a "Student-Designed Major." So far, 17 students have completed or are currently completing a "Student-Designed Major."

Pukyong National University plans to further activate the operation of "Student-Designed Majors" by providing curriculum design consulting involving professors and staff, strengthening monitoring to support students' successful completion, and expanding convergence and customized education.
