'Slam Dunk' and 'GwiKal' Unusually Positioned in Top 5
The Japanese animated film 'Suzume no Tojimari' opened at number one at the box office, attracting 140,000 viewers on its first day.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system on the 9th, 'Suzume no Tojimari' (director Makoto Shinkai), which was released on the 8th, drew 143,499 viewers, securing the top spot at the box office. Including preview screenings, the cumulative audience reached 203,059.
'Suzume no Tojimari' tells the story of a girl named Suzume who accidentally opens a door that brings disaster, and desperately closes doors to prevent disasters occurring across Japan.
Director Makoto Shinkai attracted over 10 million viewers in Japan for the third consecutive time with 'Suzume no Tojimari,' following his films 'Your Name.' (2017) and 'Weathering with You' (2019). The director also has a strong fanbase domestically, so the film is expected to maintain its box office lead for some time.
The second place was taken by the Japanese animation 'The First Slam Dunk.' It was watched by 24,863 people the previous day, with a cumulative audience of 3,895,172.
The film 'Daeoibi,' starring actors Jo Jin-woong and Lee Sung-min, drew 20,915 viewers and dropped to third place, while the fourth place was occupied by the Japanese animation 'Demon Slayer: Upper Rank Gathering and the Blacksmith Village,' which was seen by about 10,000 people.
It is unusual for three Japanese animated films to be included in the top ranks of the box office.
