'Emma Watson Appears in Obscene Advertisement'... It Was an AI Deepfake

Famous Actor's Face and Voice Precisely Synthesized
Meta and Apple "Will Ban Pornographic Content"

Overseas famous actors, including Emma Watson, the protagonist of the movie 'Harry Potter,' are appearing in obscene advertisements on social networking services (SNS) through deepfake technology.

Deepfake is an artificial intelligence (AI) technology method that synthesizes another person's face and voice in videos. Recently, this technology has become more sophisticated, and the problem is serious as the faces of ordinary people, including children, can be used without consent beyond just famous celebrities.

On the 8th (local time), NBC News in the United States reported that obscene videos synthesized with the faces of famous actors using deepfake are spreading mainly on SNS.

The media counted that among app advertisements on Meta's SNS such as Facebook, 127 resembled Watson, and another 74 synthesized the face of Hollywood action actress Scarlett Johansson. In fact, the smiling Emma Watson in the advertisement was not actually filmed but synthesized by deepfake.

Currently, Meta prohibits maliciously manipulated deepfake content.

However, the apps reviewed by NBC create deepfake videos that skirt regulations by limiting explicit behavior but pushing the boundaries.

The advertisements disappeared from Meta's services once NBC began investigating. They were originally available for free download on the Apple App Store but were deleted after the investigation.

According to a 2019 report by Deeptrace, an online synthetic media monitoring company, 96% of online deepfake materials were pornographic.

Meta stated, "Our policy prohibits adult content whether created by AI or not," and "We have prevented this page from advertising on our platform."

Apple also conveyed its position, saying, "We do not yet have specific rules regarding deepfake, but apps containing pornographic and defamatory content are prohibited."
