Democratic Party's Largest Lawmakers' Meeting: "Lee Jae-myung Must Take Responsibility and Lead Efforts to Resolve Distrust and Innovate"

Statement Released Following The Better Future Breakfast Meeting
Meeting With Representative Lee Held On The 15th

The Better Future, the largest parliamentary group within the Democratic Party of Korea, demanded that Representative Lee Jae-myung take steps to resolve internal distrust and pursue innovation following a large-scale rebellion vote during the vote on the arrest motion against him, which has led to ongoing turmoil within the party.

On the 8th, the Better Future held a breakfast meeting and then released a statement titled "Better Future's Position on the Party's Situation and Future Direction." The statement included the content that "Representative Lee feels a heavy sense of responsibility for the current situation and is requested to actively take the lead in resolving the party's distrust and pursuing innovation."

Although the Democratic Party rejected the arrest motion against Representative Lee, confusion ensued after it was revealed that some party members voted in favor of the motion. Subsequently, supporters of Representative Lee targeted members critical of him as losing candidates, and protest phone calls via text messages continued, furthering the turmoil.

They explicitly stated that the responsibility for managing the current situation lies with Representative Lee, and that the direction should focus on addressing internal distrust and party innovation.

Along with the call for reform directed at Representative Lee, they announced, "To share our position and discuss the party's future direction, a meeting between Representative Lee and the Better Future will be held on the 15th."

Additionally, the statement shared the view that "restoring trust in the Democratic Party, innovation, and unity are the most important immediate tasks," and included the commitment to "swiftly handle the 5 billion Club special investigation, reorganize as a people-centered party that protects citizens' lives, and become a strong opposition party that corrects the Yoon Seok-yeol administration's failures." Furthermore, it expressed, "As members of the Democratic Party, we deeply feel responsible for failing to properly confront the Democratic Party's oppression by the prosecutorial dictatorship regime, which has led to division within the party due to distrust," and declared, "We firmly reject any attempts to incite division and will actively communicate with various opinion groups within the party to promote unity."

The Better Future's mention of the 5 billion Club special investigation and the Democratic Party's oppression by the prosecutorial dictatorship regime is interpreted as an expression of agreement with the current administration's approach to handling the political situation under Representative Lee's leadership.
