Seoul City Expands 'Greenhouse Gas Monitoring Network' to Guro Area

Expanding Measurement Network to Southwest Seoul Area

The Seoul Institute of Health and Environment announced on the 8th that it has newly installed greenhouse gas measurement equipment at the Guro Urban Air Quality Monitoring Station in January, expanding the "greenhouse gas measurement network" from three to four locations.

With the expansion of the measurement network, it has become possible to measure greenhouse gas concentrations in the southwestern region of Seoul, where there were previously no monitoring stations, enabling a more accurate understanding of the current greenhouse gas concentration status in Seoul.

From June to October last year, the Seoul Institute of Health and Environment carried out improvement projects including adjusting the air intake location at the Namsan monitoring station and installing a water vapor cooling and removal device. Through this, it plans to provide basic data for policy establishment based on accurate greenhouse gas measurement results. In addition, the institute has signed agreements with the National Institute of Environmental Research, the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences, Seoul National University Graduate School of Environmental Studies, and the Polar Science Education and Research Center, and is continuously promoting joint research and cooperation.

Shin Yong-seung, Director of the Seoul Institute of Health and Environment, stated, “To achieve the 2050 carbon neutrality goal, it is important to understand Seoul’s greenhouse gas emissions and accurately measure greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere,” adding, “Seoul will secure accurate measurement data through the improved ‘greenhouse gas measurement network’ and use this as a basis to establish effective climate change response measures.”
