On the 7th, the Jeonnam Provincial Council and Jeonnam Province held a symposium on the theme of ‘Carbon Neutrality Implementation Strategy’ to expand blue carbon at the council's Choi Ui Room.
This symposium was conducted under the leadership of Choi Seon-guk, Chair of the Health, Welfare and Environment Committee of the Jeonnam Provincial Council (Democratic Party·Mokpo 1), to recognize blue carbon in wetlands and tidal flats and to realize carbon neutrality.

Kim Jong-il, Director of the Jeonnam Carbon Neutrality Support Center, served as the chair, with participants including Jeonnam Provincial Council member Jeong Young-gyun, Professor Kim Tae-hoon of Chonnam National University, Dr. Shin Woo-seok of Jeju Research Institute, Manager Choi Im-ho of Korea Fisheries Resources Agency, and Director Kim Yong-deok of the Jeonnam Tidal Flat Conservation Management Promotion Team.
The attendees emphasized the creation of climate change-adaptive coasts based on blue carbon and the discovery of new blue carbon resources, and explained the accumulation of Jeonnam-type blue carbon data and the establishment of an inventory.
Chairman Choi Seon-guk stated, “Blue carbon, a coastal carbon sink such as tidal flats, is an important key to responding to the climate crisis and carbon neutrality,” and emphasized, “By utilizing the marine resources possessed by Jeonnam, it will be possible to lead carbon neutrality as a global blue carbon hub.”
He added, “It is necessary to secure comprehensive plans and data using blue carbon and to promote tidal flat vegetation restoration.”
