POSCO-Gyeongbuk, Hinamno Flood Recovery and Disaster Prevention MOU
POSCO will cooperate with Gyeongsangbuk-do to promote early flood recovery from Typhoon Hinnamnor damage.
On the 6th, POSCO signed a business agreement with Gyeongsangbuk-do to successfully carry out flood recovery projects in the areas of Pohang and Gyeongju.
Through this agreement, POSCO's Structural Steel Marketing Office will prioritize the production and supply of construction steel materials used in Gyeongsangbuk-do's flood recovery and disaster prevention projects according to the schedule, and will mutually cooperate with Gyeongsangbuk-do by applying steel bridges effective in natural disaster prevention and POSCO's disaster safety infrastructure solutions. In addition, together with the Steel Solutions Research Institute, support will be provided for design, structural analysis, and technical consulting for the application of eco-friendly steel bridges.
Gyeongsangbuk-do is currently conducting detailed design for local rivers and roads in the Pohang and Gyeongju areas, and plans to complete the design after preliminary review and environmental impact assessment, with construction orders scheduled to begin in April.
POSCO and Gyeongsangbuk-do plan to form and operate a working committee within this month to promptly promote technical cooperation on bridges and structural steel products for disaster prevention.
The signing ceremony held at the Gyeongbuk Provincial Office was attended by POSCO Vice Chairman Kim Hak-dong, Gyeongsangbuk-do Deputy Governor Kim Hak-hong, and Gyeongsangbuk-do Council Vice Chairman Park Yong-seon.
Vice Chairman Kim Hak-dong expressed gratitude to the local community, saying, "Despite the unprecedented flooding of the Pohang Steelworks caused by the overflow of Naengcheon Stream, thanks to the dedication and efforts of the local community and the public, private, and military sectors to normalize the steelworks, we achieved the miracle of completing recovery within 135 days of flooding." He added, "Through cooperation with Gyeongsangbuk-do, we can contribute to disaster prevention that may occur in the local community and repay the kindness received during the flood recovery process."
Gyeongsangbuk-do Deputy Governor Kim Hak-hong said, "POSCO is a representative company of the local community playing a pivotal role in the national economy and has the resilience to successfully overcome the steelworks flooding damage in a short period." He added, "I am very pleased and grateful to cooperate hand in hand for flood recovery and development of the region."
Meanwhile, POSCO plans to expand the scope of cooperation with Gyeongsangbuk-do beyond infrastructure to the construction sector, starting with this flood recovery project.
POSCO will expand cooperation in applying eco-friendly structural steel construction technologies such as low-carbon structural materials and zero-energy buildings to long-life housing projects, which Gyeongsangbuk-do is focusing on for durability and ease of internal structure modification and repair, as well as the Golden Science Park (Hahoe Scientist Village) project to attract retired scientists and engineers.
