Jasaeng Korean Medicine Hospital Spine and Joint Research Institute announced on the 6th that it has obtained two patents for herbal medicine compositions, including treatments for menopause.

The patented compositions include a complex extract composition combining Hwangjeong and Yeonjayuk, and an extract composition of Baekrihyang. Hwangjeong and Baekhap are dried rhizomes of plants and are among the main herbal ingredients prescribed in JS-Trogen, a treatment for menopause at Jasaeng Korean Medicine Hospital. Yeonjayuk, the lotus seed of the Nymphaeaceae family, has also been a precious herbal medicine since ancient times, prescribed by royal physicians during the Joseon Dynasty to stabilize the king’s mind and body.
The patented complex extract of Hwangjeong and Yeonjayuk is known to exert effects similar to estrogen, a female hormone, helping to improve osteoporosis and vaginal dryness. The research institute explained that this extract showed higher estrogenic activity than the previously patented Hwangjeong extract alone, and is expected to become a core technology for treating menopausal symptoms without side effects.
The Baekrihyang extract composition is used for preventing and treating hangovers. The newly patented Baekrihyang extract was found to increase the activity of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), an enzyme that breaks down alcohol, in a concentration-dependent manner, and was also effective in improving liver function and treating hangovers. Dr. Park Doori of Jasaeng Korean Medicine Hospital Spine and Joint Research Institute said, "We are pleased to have our technological capabilities in researching herbal extract compositions recognized through this patent," adding, "We will accelerate scientific verification of the efficacy of pharmaceutical compositions for disease prevention and treatment centered on this patent in the future."
