Final Decision: Withdrawal from The Players Championship
The 'Golf Emperor' Tiger Woods (USA) will skip The Players Championship, known as the 'fifth major.'
Woods was listed on the entry for The Players Championship (total prize money $25 million) which closed on the 4th (Korean time), but he decided not to participate. The Players Championship will be held over four days starting from the 9th at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, USA. Woods won this tournament in 2001 and 2013.
After missing the cut at last July's major The Open, Woods devoted seven months to rehabilitation and training, not appearing in regular tour events. However, he made a surprise appearance last month at the Genesis Invitational, hosted by the Tiger Woods Foundation, demonstrating his resilience. At the Genesis Invitational, he completed all four rounds on foot for the first time in 10 months and showed his former form with drives exceeding 320 yards.
Woods had been weighing participation in The Players Championship but ultimately chose to withdraw. He opted to focus on building more strength and conserving stamina in preparation for the season's first major, the Masters, held on May 7 at Augusta National in Georgia, USA. Woods made his comeback at the Masters in April last year, 1 year and 2 months after his February 2021 car accident, impressively finishing 47th.
