"Why Do Female Customers Get Less Food?"... Controversy Over 'Gender Discrimination at the Dining Table'

"There Are Places That Give More Food Only to Men," SNS Expos?
Restaurant Owner: "Men Pay Extra... Women Do Not"

A controversy is ongoing online after a consumer review claimed that a restaurant practiced gender discrimination based on the amount of rice served per bowl. The debate intensified as the restaurant owner posted a statement explaining the situation.

Recently, a Twitter user named A posted, "There really is a place that gives men more rice," adding, "When I ordered, they asked what menu item the woman ordered. When I asked why, they said men are served larger portions. I think it's outdated and unfair, especially since the price is the same. Those planning to visit should be aware." A's post quickly spread across various online communities.

The restaurant owner, B, posted a clarification. B said, "I never expected to face such an issue just for giving a bit more rice," and added, "It's disappointing that a customer accused us of gender discrimination based on portion sizes."

B continued, "A female customer was upset, claiming we discriminated by rice portions. Despite explaining thoroughly, she posted a critical message. We don't give less to women; rather, we serve men extra rice upfront. If additional rice bowls are ordered afterward, men are charged 1,000 won per bowl, while women receive them free of charge," he explained.

He further stated, "'The daily changing set meal' includes many side dishes, and the rice bowls with toppings are generous, so many female customers leave rice uneaten. Therefore, women are served smaller portions initially and can get more rice without extra charge if needed, while men receive larger portions upfront and pay 1,000 won for additional bowls," he added.

B said, "Why is this considered bad discrimination against women? This is a know-how I developed over years of running the business," and shared, "Many customers even complimented this as thoughtful."

He continued, "I've endured this business with the belief that food service requires sincerity, but this situation is very disappointing," and added, "Running a small business these days is very tough, but I was holding on thanks to customers saying 'delicious' and 'generous.' However, one critical post keeps bringing in negative messages," expressing his difficulties.

Public opinion on the owner's explanation is divided. Some netizens responded, "The customer has every right to feel upset," and "It might be a bit inconvenient, but why not serve men and women equally, and if more is needed, give more, then charge equally for additional servings?"

On the other hand, some others commented, "This is a know-how developed over a long time running the business, and it doesn't seem like discrimination," and "They said they would give more if asked, so what's the problem?"
