Preparation for Safety Accidents Such as Water Pipe Bursts and Leaks
The Seoul Metropolitan Waterworks Authority announced on the 2nd that it will conduct safety inspections of 425 water supply facilities and construction sites by the end of this month to ensure the safe supply of drinking water during the thawing season.
Every year in February and March, during the thawing season, the ground that was frozen throughout the winter softens, weakening the foundation and increasing the risk of water pipe bursts and various leakage accidents.
This inspection is being carried out to prevent various safety accidents by proactively eliminating various risk factors at sites where safety accidents are a concern during the thawing season.
The Waterworks Authority will conduct safety inspections on a total of 425 locations: ▲10 intake and water purification plants for tap water production ▲221 Arisu Olimter facilities supplying tap water to high-altitude areas ▲103 water storage tanks serving as water distribution stations for stable water supply ▲10 exposed pipes at subway construction sites ▲and 2 large construction sites undergoing long-term maintenance of transmission and distribution pipes.
The safety inspections will be conducted jointly with private experts. Specialists from various related fields such as water supply and sewage, water quality, civil engineering structures, electricity, machinery, gas, and safety will participate.
In particular, facilities judged to have a high risk of safety accidents during the thawing season will be the focus of the inspection. Key inspection items include ▲ground subsidence caused by groundwater inflow and outflow during the thawing season ▲reinforcement corrosion due to infiltration of water in cracked areas ▲and the occurrence of bulging phenomena in retaining walls or embankments.
Minor risk factors discovered during the inspection process will be immediately addressed on site, and for facilities with high risk, separate action plans such as detailed inspections, precise safety diagnoses, and repairs and reinforcements will be prepared.
Yoo Yeon-sik, head of the Seoul Metropolitan Waterworks Authority, said, “We will thoroughly inspect and eliminate risk factors in water supply facilities that may occur during the thawing season to ensure the safest possible drinking water supply,” adding, “We will do our best to prevent any unexpected safety accidents that could cause inconvenience to citizens during the warm spring season.”
