Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is set to actively promote the construction of the Time Post Office, an analog-sentiment space, in Sajik-dong.
This is one of the campaign promises of Nam-gu Mayor Kim Byeong-nae, aimed at attracting tourists to Sajik-dong, the thousand-year-old Seonbi village, to revitalize the old downtown area.
On the 28th, Nam-gu announced, "To create a landmark in the old downtown Sajik-dong and a nostalgic street shared by people of all ages, we will invest about 5.8 billion KRW to build the Time Post Office, which will be one basement floor and three floors above ground."
The Sajik-dong Time Post Office will be constructed with one basement floor and three floors above ground.
To this end, Nam-gu has already purchased public and abandoned houses, and plans to start full-scale construction in the second half of this year, aiming for completion around the end of the first half of next year.
The Time Post Office will be built on a site of 1,189㎡, with a reinforced concrete basement and a wooden structure above ground.
On the first floor above ground, a DJ box will be installed to receive various stories and song requests, providing a space for commemorative events and a souvenir shop. Visitors can use services such as letter and poem readings, story recitations, and music on the event day through prior reservations via SNS channels.
Additionally, an operations office will be established, where dedicated staff including an honorary postmaster will be assigned to store various letters and time capsules entrusted to the Time Post Office and send them on the dates specified by the applicants.
The sending dates for letters and time capsules can be designated by applicants from a minimum of one month up to a maximum of 100 years. If the recipient’s address changes, submitting a consent form for personal information access will allow the recipient to receive the letters and time capsules at the updated address.
The second and third floors above ground will be filled with reception desks and transparent storage rooms for various letters and time capsules, exhibition spaces for letters that changed history, artist exhibition rooms, a wish letter space for recording wishes, and a photo zone with stained glass windows as a backdrop.
Meanwhile, the basement floor will serve as a sub-content space for the Time Post Office, where a provisional ‘7080 Salon’ and ‘MZ Salon’ will be created for middle-aged and younger generations to share various music and stories.
A Nam-gu official said, “The Time Post Office will become a landmark of Sajik-dong along with the acoustic guitar street and Sajik Park. Especially as a spot that stimulates analog sensibility, it is expected to create a synergy effect with the nearby Yangnim-dong Modern History and Culture Village, attracting many visitors from across the country.”
