Adult Literacy Education Graduation Ceremony, 23 Seniors Obtain Elementary School Equivalency
A graduation ceremony was held in Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do, for adult literacy education graduates who missed the opportunity to learn earlier in life.
According to the county on the 28th, a meaningful graduation ceremony took place with the attendance of families, where a total of 23 people, including the eldest at 97 years old, completed the course at three institutions operating literacy education programs recognized by the Jeollanam-do Superintendent of Education for elementary-level academic credit.
In particular, prior to the graduation ceremony, graduates and their families prepared congratulatory videos as a pre-ceremony event, which moved the attendees.
Additionally, the volunteer hair and beauty group in Gunnae-myeon prepared hair and makeup for the graduates, and the Gogeun-myeon Residents' Autonomous Association sponsored albums and diaries filled with memories.
Kim Samsim, a 97-year-old female graduate who received her diploma, said, “I always had a lingering regret in my heart for not having learned properly,” adding, “I am very happy to have obtained the opportunity to learn, worked hard, and finally graduated with elementary school academic credit.”
County Governor Kim Hee-su said, “I give my respectful applause to the passion of those who did not give up their enthusiasm for learning during the long three years amid the COVID-19 situation,” and added, “I hope today’s graduation ceremony is not the end but a new beginning, and that you continue to ignite your academic passion.”
The literacy education program recognized for academic credit is designed for adult learners aged 18 and over who missed the opportunity to learn due to unavoidable circumstances. It provides not only the ability to read and write Hangul but also the opportunity to obtain elementary and middle school academic credits.
Meanwhile, Jindo-gun plans to operate 61 Hangul schools with 348 students and 19 literacy schools (elementary and non-designated middle schools) with 210 students in the 2023 academic year.
