Goseong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, will accept applications for the Agricultural and Fishery Workers Allowance at the local eup/myeon offices starting from March 2, aiming to promote sustainable development and enhance the public functions of agriculture, fisheries, and rural areas.
The Agricultural and Fishery Workers Allowance, discussed since the need for a direct support system for farmers and fishers arose in 2015, began to materialize only in 2020 after more than five years due to various practical difficulties, with the related ordinance being enacted and promulgated.
Since then, Gyeongnam Province and each city and county have held continuous consultations, and in June 2021, the Gyeongsangnam-do Mayors and County Governors Council delegated the task of allowance payment to the cities and counties, leading to the first payment of the Agricultural and Fishery Workers Allowance in 2022.
Last year, Goseong-gun supported 10,597 agricultural, fishery, and forestry business owners and co-managers with a project fund of 3.179 billion KRW through Nonghyup Chaum Cards and prepaid cards, and this year applications will be accepted at eup/myeon offices within the county from March 2 to April 14.
Eligibility requires being a business owner or co-manager of an agricultural or fishery management entity residing in Goseong-gun from January 1, 2022, until the application date; however, those with non-agricultural income exceeding 37 million KRW in 2021, violators of related laws, and recipients of fraudulent subsidies are excluded.
The county plans to finalize recipients and disburse the support funds by June 14 after reviewing eligibility, support amounts, and handling objections.
The paid Agricultural and Fishery Workers Allowance can be used starting July 17 and is available for various uses except for certain restricted industries such as entertainment bars, internet shopping malls, and karaoke rooms.
Park Tae-su, Director of the Rural Policy Division, said, “We hope that every agricultural and fishery worker, who is responsible for stable food production, will apply without exception so that they can be compensated even a little for their agricultural and fishery activities.”
