Signature Campaign for Citizens Until Mid-March
A nationwide citizen signature campaign has begun in Sacheon, Gyeongnam, urging the early enactment of a special law to establish the Korea version of NASA (the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration), the Space Aviation Agency.
The Sacheon Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced on the 27th that it will launch a signature campaign calling for the early enactment of the 'Special Act for the Establishment of the Space Aviation Agency' targeting Sacheon citizens until mid-March.
This signature campaign was initiated to urge the 'early enactment of the special law' to open the Space Aviation Agency within this year, and anyone can participate through signature books placed at the Sacheon City Hall Civil Service Office and Eup/Myeon/Dong Administrative Welfare Centers.
In particular, it appears to also carry the meaning of supporting the government’s plan to enact the special law concerning the establishment and operation of the Space Aviation Agency in the first half of this year. The Sacheon Chamber of Commerce and Industry aims to collect signatures from 70,000 people, about 60% of the total population.
The Chamber of Commerce is actively conducting activities for a successful signature campaign by seeking cooperation from chambers of commerce in the Gyeongnam region as well as local organizations and institutions.
The petition expresses the urgent need for the establishment of the Space Aviation Agency through the early enactment of the special law, emphasizing that South Korea, which currently lacks a dedicated department in the era of global space competition, must leap forward as a space power.
The government is known to be proceeding with administrative procedures in line with the legislative announcement of the 'Special Act on the Establishment and Operation of the Space Aviation Agency' scheduled for next week, the National Assembly’s approval in May, and the agency’s opening in December.
Chairman Seo Hee-young said, “This signature campaign contains the heartfelt wish for South Korea’s leap to become a space power, and I hope it will serve as an opportunity to promote the early establishment of the Space Aviation Agency.”
