LIV Golf Opening Event Mayakoba Day Two
Peter Uihlein (USA) takes the lead.
On the 26th (KST), Uihlein shot a 5-under 66 in the second round of the LIV Golf season opener Mayakoba (total prize money $25 million) held at El Camaleon Golf Course (par 71, 7,049 yards) in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, sharing the top of the leaderboard (9-under 133) with Taylor Gooch (USA). LIV Golf, backed by Saudi Arabian capital, launched last June under the name 'LIV Golf International Series' and returned this year as the expanded 'LIV Golf League.' Each tournament features a 'money feast' with $20 million (about 2.63 billion KRW) for individual competition and $5 million (about 660 million KRW) for team competition.
Peter Uihlein surged with a 5-under-par performance in the second round of the LIV Golf season opener in Mayakoba, rising to a tie for the lead.
Uihlein recorded seven birdies and two bogeys. His front nine surge stood out with consecutive birdies on holes 4 and 5, followed by a three-birdie streak from holes 7 to 9. After a birdie on the 13th hole (par 5), he bogeyed the 16th but recovered with a birdie on the 17th. However, a bogey on the final 18th hole (par 4) was disappointing. Uihlein is well known as the son of Wally Uihlein, former chairman of Acushnet, the company that owns brands like Titleist and FootJoy. After winning the 2010 US Amateur Championship, he moved to the European (EPGA) Challenge Tour in 2012 to build his skills. He has one win in Europe and two wins on the PGA Tour’s Korn Ferry (second-tier) Tour. He joined the PGA Tour in 2017 and transferred to LIV Golf last year.
Charles Howell III (USA) is in third place (8-under 134), while Paul Casey (England) and Brandon Grace (South Africa) share fourth place (6-under 136). Last season’s leading money winner Dustin Johnson (USA) is tied for 10th (3-under 139). Dai Le (New Zealand) is tied for 18th (even par 142), and Kevin Na (USA) is tied for 26th (1-over 143). Kim Si-hwan (USA) is in last place, 48th (17-over 159).
