[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City is operating the 365 Cleanliness Task Force to solve the weekend garbage problem in the Sangmu District, accelerating efforts to create Sangmu District as the No. 1 clean area.
According to Seo-gu on the 23rd, the purpose of the 365 Cleanliness Task Force is to supplement vulnerable time periods on weekday afternoons and weekends when sanitation workers are not on duty. The task force is deployed around Sangmu Square in the Sangmu District to clean illegally dumped garbage and to promote compliance with garbage disposal times and proper disposal practices.
Seo-gu hired six cleanliness task force members last month, and until July, they will operate in pairs for five hours each on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 4 p.m., Saturdays from 12 p.m., and Sundays from 7 a.m.
Additionally, to create a clean city without garbage this year, Seo-gu plans to focus on resident participation policies such as operating the ‘Clean Storefront, Clean Shop’ campaign where residents sweep in front of their own stores, installing street recycling bins, and holding a citizen video contest on waste reduction.
A Seo-gu official said, “While administrative efforts are necessary to create a clean urban environment, above all, a mature resident consciousness that properly observes basic order is most important,” and added, “Since Sangmu District can be considered the face of Gwangju, we ask for active cooperation from residents.”
Meanwhile, Seo-gu has been steadily conducting activities such as operating a dedicated Sunday cleaning team last year, publicizing compliance with disposal times to citizens, holding public-private cooperation meetings with merchant associations, self-governing organizations, and food service associations, and conducting guidance and crackdowns on illegal disposal by entertainment establishments.
