Ulsan City to Spend 24 Billion KRW on 7,500 Diesel Vehicles to Combat Fine Dust

2023 Vehicle Emission Reduction Project

Early Scrappage 5,500 Units · Particulate Matter Reduction Devices 1,000 Units

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Ulsan City is promoting the ‘Vehicle Emission Reduction Project’ to reduce fine dust in urban areas.

The total budget for this year is 24.1 billion KRW, targeting old diesel vehicles with ▲5,500 early retirements ▲1,000 installations of particulate matter reduction devices ▲200 LPG cargo trucks ▲70 LPG children’s school vehicles, among others.

The subsidy amount for early retirement is determined based on the vehicle’s standard value calculated by the Insurance Development Institute. For passenger cars with five seats or fewer, 50% of the standard value is provided as an early retirement subsidy. Additionally, 50% of the subsidy for purchasing a new vehicle (including used cars rated 1 to 2) is provided.

For example, if a vehicle’s standard value is 1 million KRW, retiring the vehicle early will receive a total of 1 million KRW in support: 500,000 KRW for early retirement and 500,000 KRW for new vehicle purchase support. However, if a diesel vehicle is purchased, the new vehicle purchase subsidy is excluded.

Starting this year, non-road construction machinery such as forklifts and excavators are also eligible for early retirement support.

Applications for early retirement can be submitted online from the 22nd via the Vehicle Emission Gas Nuri website or by registered mail or email to the Korea Automobile Environment Association.

However, applications for particulate matter reduction devices can only be submitted online. For detailed information, please refer to the announcement posted on the Ulsan City website’s public notices.

An official from Ulsan City stated, “With the issuance of high-concentration fine dust emergency reduction measures and the implementation of the seasonal management system starting this December, operation of grade 5 emission vehicles will be restricted,” and added, “We hope for interest and participation in reduction projects such as early retirement of diesel vehicles.”
