Gyeongbuk Province Launches Hanbok K-Culture Hub... Hanbok Culture Creation Center Opens in Sangju

Creation of Experience and Convergence Space at Hanbok Promotion Institute

Exhibition, Production, Sales, R&D, and Education Functions

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-sun] A center leading K-culture in the field of Hanbok culture and industry has been established in Sangju City, Gyeongbuk Province.


On the 22nd, Gyeongbuk Province will hold the opening ceremony of the Gyeongbuk Hanbok Culture Creation Center at the Korea Hanbok Promotion Agency.


The event was attended by Kim Sang-chul, Director of Culture, Tourism and Sports Bureau of Gyeongbuk Province; Kang Young-seok, Mayor of Sangju City; Kim Deok-gi, Vice President of Gyeongbuk Cultural Foundation; officials from the Korea Craft & Design Foundation under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; local Hanbok experts; and entrepreneurs residing at the Korea Hanbok Promotion Agency.


The Gyeongbuk Hanbok Culture Creation Center, installed at the Hanbok Transmission School of the Korea Hanbok Promotion Agency, consists of a total of six production rooms: △ Hanbok Sample Production Room △ Hanbok Startup Development Room △ Hanbok Pattern Production Room △ Cutting Room △ Graphic Video Room △ Live Commerce Filming Studio.


It will be responsible for specialized education for training technicians in the production process including Hanbok design development, practical education for Hanbok production, and experiential education that allows easy access to Hanbok culture.


This center has realized the modernization of the Hanbok production process by utilizing professional equipment such as laser cutters, smart embroidery machines, special sewing machines (interlock, electronic button attaching), pattern printers, and pattern input devices.


It operates as a support system aimed at the growth and promotion of the Hanbok industry by providing an optimal working environment for Hanbok designers, including the installation and provision of customized worktables.


It was selected as a project by the Korea Craft & Design Foundation under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2022.


With a total budget of 1.3 billion KRW over three years (1 billion KRW from the national government), the first year focuses on establishing the infrastructure of the Hanbok Culture Creation Center, the second year on operating detailed programs of the center, and the third year on strengthening its own capabilities in stages.


In the first year project last year, the Hanbok Culture Creation Center infrastructure (161 pyeong, 6 production rooms) was established within the Hanbok Transmission School of the Korea Hanbok Promotion Agency, and a Hanbok culture experience education program was operated for 3,236 students from a total of 66 elementary, middle, and high schools in the Gyeongbuk region.


Kim Sang-chul, Director of Culture, Tourism and Sports Bureau of Gyeongbuk Province, said, “We plan to comprehensively support the Hanbok culture industry and create sophisticated and attractive Hanbok and Hanbok cultural contents based on tradition and trends to lead the local era and globalization.”
