Gyeonggi Province will conduct intensive inspections on origin labeling violations at imported seafood handling stores.
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is launching a focused crackdown on imported seafood.
The Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police for Public Welfare announced on the 22nd that from the 27th of this month until the 10th of next month, they will conduct a focused inspection of 360 restaurants handling imported seafood within the province.
The main investigation items include acts of false or confusing labeling of the origin of seafood, failure to label the origin, and violations of business operators' compliance requirements.
For some imported seafood, random sample collection and radiation testing will also be conducted to verify the safety of the seafood.
If the test results detect radiation levels exceeding the standard (100 Bq/kg), the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety will be notified to take measures to recall the affected products through the relevant authorities.
The current "Act on the Labeling of Origin of Agricultural and Fishery Products" stipulates that false or confusing labeling of imported seafood as domestic origin is punishable by imprisonment of up to 7 years or a fine of up to 100 million KRW.
Violations detected during this crackdown will be reported to the relevant administrative agencies for administrative sanctions, and offenders will be booked and referred to the prosecution for strict measures.
Hong Eun-gi, head of the Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police for Public Welfare, stated, "We will do our best to alleviate residents' concerns about seafood safety and provide safe seafood food products."
