[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seok-jin, Legal Affairs Specialist] The High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Agency (PCC) has detected bribery allegations against a current police executive and launched a forced investigation.

The PCC's Investigation Division 3 (Chief Prosecutor Kim Seon-gyu) dispatched about 40 investigators on the morning of the 21st to approximately 10 locations, including the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency in Jongno-gu, Seoul, the office of the mid-sized construction company Daewoo Industrial Development, and the residences of related parties, conducting search and seizure operations.

PCC investigators secured materials such as emails and internal messenger communications from the office of the police executive under investigation.

A PCC official stated, "This is a search and seizure operation to clarify allegations of bribery related to the duties of a current high-ranking police official."

It is known that the PCC carried out the search and seizure today to obtain evidence related to allegations of bribery amounting to several hundred million won involving a certain Police Superintendent affiliated with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency under the National Police Agency. The superintendent is accused of receiving bribes worth several hundred million won multiple times while serving in a previous position, not the current one.

The PCC reportedly became aware of related criminal intelligence earlier this year and has been conducting a preliminary investigation. This is the first time the PCC has initiated a forced investigation after independently recognizing and investigating a case.

The Police Superintendent is a rank below the Commissioner General (Chief of Police), Deputy Commissioner General, and Commissioner, and belongs to the police leadership. Article 2, Clause 1, Subparagraph Ha of the PCC Act defines "police officers of Superintendent rank or higher" as high-ranking public officials subject to PCC investigation.
