Three Middle Schools in Suncheon Area to Implement Coeducation This Year

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] The Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education is promoting coeducation for single-gender middle schools in the Suncheon area to improve student placement and commuting conditions.


According to the Office of Education on the 20th, out of a total of 255 middle schools in Jeonnam, 208 schools (81.6%) are coeducational, and 47 schools (18.4%) are single-gender.


Last year, Jangheung Middle School, Jangheung Girls' Middle School, Yeonggwang Middle School, Yeonggwang Girls' Middle School, and Haeryong Middle School were reorganized into coeducational schools, and this year, coeducation will be promoted for single-gender middle schools in the Suncheon area.

The target schools are Suncheon Girls' Middle School, Suncheon Isu Middle School, and Suncheon Dongsan Girls' Middle School. The Headquarters Student Placement Team, Suncheon Education Support Office, and Jangheung Education Support Office Education Cooperation Team recently conducted consulting on coeducation reorganization to resolve student placement and commuting issues.


The attendees discussed ▲ key matters of the coeducation reorganization procedure ▲ analysis of the progress of coeducation reorganization in the Suncheon area ▲ presentation of the case of coeducation reorganization at Jangheung Middle School and Jangheung Girls' Middle School ▲ preparation for future public discussion processes and promotional activities.


Park Jin-su, Director of Administration, said, “In the case of the original downtown area of Suncheon, recent urban development projects have increased inflow, exacerbating inconveniences for parents and students due to long-distance commuting,” and added, “We hope that through coeducation reorganization, students' school choice will be expanded and commuting conditions improved.”
