[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) was detected in wild birds in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, prompting Pocheon City and quarantine authorities to take measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

On the 19th, Pocheon City announced, "As a result of a detailed examination conducted on the 18th by the National Wildlife Disease Control Center, highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) was detected in the carcass of a greater white-fronted goose near Pocheoncheon in Gu-eup-ri, Gunnae-myeon, Pocheon City."


The city has designated a 10 km radius around the carcass detection site as a surveillance area and is strengthening quarantine measures such as isolation, detention, movement restrictions, disinfection, traffic blockades, and access control orders.


Within the surveillance area, 26 full-time farms raise approximately 2.75 million poultry, and 75 part-time farms raise 2,324 poultry.


Baek Young-hyun, mayor of Pocheon City, stated, "The city will promptly implement all measures related to the outbreak of wild bird AI, including movement restrictions and quarantine." He added, "We will concentrate all our efforts on preventing the spread of AI through close cooperation with the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency and the Northern Gyeonggi Animal Health Laboratory."
