60s Found Dead at Home in Ireland... Culprit Is a Raised Chicken

Attacked by Rooster, Calf and Leg Injuries
Cause of Death: Cardiac Arrest Due to Excessive Bleeding

It was revealed that the cause of death of a man in his 60s who died of a heart attack in Ireland last year was excessive bleeding caused by an attack from a chicken he was raising.

On the 16th (local time), British daily The Telegraph and other foreign media reported that the heart attack of Jasper Kraus (67), who died at his home last April, was caused by heavy bleeding. Kraus, originally from The Hague, Netherlands, was found collapsed at his home in Roscommon, Ireland, at the time of the accident. A large amount of blood was flowing from the back of his left calf, and several wounds were visible on his right leg.

The person who found Kraus was Cory O'Keeffe, who had been boarding at Kraus's house and taking care of the animals together for two years. On the day of the accident, he returned home at 8 a.m. after finishing his night shift, fed the animals, greeted Kraus, and then headed to bed. However, shortly after, he woke up upon hearing Kraus's scream shouting "Come quickly" and rushed over to find Kraus already covered in blood. Kraus's last words before losing consciousness were "rooster."

O'Keeffe performed CPR on Kraus for 25 minutes before the ambulance arrived, but he ultimately did not regain consciousness. Virginia (33), Kraus's daughter who rushed over upon hearing the news of her father's death, said she instinctively knew the chicken was the culprit because the chicken had previously attacked her own daughter. She said, "I wanted to get rid of the chicken, but my father, an animal lover, insisted on keeping it." It was reported that Kraus was looking for the grave of a dog outdoors when he was attacked by the chicken. The chicken Kraus raised was a Brahma breed, known as the largest among chicken breeds, with males weighing about 5.2 to 5.4 kg.

Dr. Ramadan Shatwan, who performed the autopsy on Kraus, confirmed that he had a heart attack and recorded the cause of death as cardiac arrhythmia due to excessive bleeding. According to the family, Kraus had a history of heart problems.

Kraus was also known to be a cancer survivor, which adds to the tragedy. Virginia hopes her father's death will serve as a warning to others about the dangers of raising chickens, advising, "If a chicken shows signs of aggression, even if it is a breed considered safe like the Brahma, it should be removed immediately."
