Bucheon-si Secures 1,406 Parking Spaces by Utilizing Privately Owned Idle Land

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Bucheon City in Gyeonggi Province is promoting a temporary parking lot creation project utilizing idle land, providing parking convenience to citizens while achieving budget savings.

The project to create parking lots using idle spaces targets idle spaces in old residential areas, signing land use agreements with landowners, and Bucheon City invests only in construction costs to create parking lots.

Through this project, the city has currently secured a total of 49 locations with 1,406 parking spaces.

Landowners receive a full exemption of property tax on their land portion during the agreement period (initially 3 years), and the city can achieve triple benefits: alleviating parking difficulties in old residential areas, improving urban aesthetics, and saving budget through parking lot creation.

Also, since only construction costs are invested without incurring the enormous land acquisition costs that occur when creating new parking lots, parking lots can be created with a smaller budget. Furthermore, inconveniences caused by insufficient parking spaces in densely populated residential areas have been resolved, gaining favorable responses from nearby residents.

The city plans to continue promoting the parking lot creation project by producing promotional leaflets and SNS promotions to encourage citizens' interest in discovering idle land.

Jo Yong-ik, Mayor of Bucheon City, urged, "We hope landowners actively participate so that serious parking difficulties in old residential areas can be resolved by continuously discovering idle parking spaces."
