When it comes to naming a 'city of gourmet food,' many cities around the world compete for the top spot.

Each city may vie for the throne with its representative dishes, boast the diversity of its food and ingredients, or challenge for the title of the best gourmet city by pairing exquisite ambiance as a side dish.

Selecting the best gourmet city is not an easy task, but the British media outlet Time Out introduced gourmet cities based on a survey conducted by TripAdvisor.

5th Place: Paris, France

Paris is famous as a center of art and fashion, but due to its Mediterranean climate and abundant wheat cultivation, it is also called the 'City of Bread.'

When you think of 'Paris,' the image of baguettes typically comes to mind. However, this survey recommended a different kind of bread. TripAdvisor suggested enjoying a pain au chocolat at a street-side caf? while relaxing romantically along the Seine River. Additionally, the rich buttery flavor layered in croissants and pastries also allows you to savor the flavors of Paris.

4th Place: Florence, Italy

In 4th place is Florence, also known as the 'Cradle of the Renaissance.' The entire historic district of Florence was designated a World Cultural Heritage site in 1982. Florence is famous for its food, thanks to its favorable climate.

TripAdvisor praised the heavenly happiness of dipping crispy bread generously into olive oil produced in Florence. Also well-known are bistecca alla fiorentina, a thick Florentine T-bone steak, and pappardelle al cinghiale, a wild boar rag? pasta.

3rd Place: Hanoi, Vietnam

Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, ranked 3rd as a city where you can enjoy gourmet food at affordable prices. Hanoi’s cuisine has developed from a long history and diverse cultures, showing its unique charm.

Famous dishes in Hanoi include Pho bo, beef rice noodle soup. Bun cha, which gained attention when former U.S. President Obama ate it, is also famous. The Vietnamese baguette sandwich Banh Mi is another specialty of Hanoi.

2nd Place: Crete Island, Greece

In 2nd place is Crete Island, Greece, known as the birthplace of modern European civilization and also called the 'Jewel of the Mediterranean.' It is the largest island in Greece and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean. TripAdvisor introduces Crete not only as a gourmet city but also as a popular vacation destination for Europeans.

Famous foods in Crete include Apaki, a traditional sausage unique to Crete; Dakos, a Greek tomato salad served with bread; and Kleftiko, traditional Greek roasted lamb.

1st Place: Rome, Italy

In 2023, the best gourmet travel destination in the world was selected as Rome, the capital of Italy. It is a city that cannot be left out when talking about world history and culture. With many cultural heritage sites and tourist attractions such as the Colosseum and Piazza Venezia, it is also unmatched in gourmet food.

TripAdvisor highlighted must-try dishes in Rome including Coda alla vaccinara, an oxtail stew; fried artichokes; pasta; and gelato.
