[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] The Busan Metropolitan Office of Education and the Busan Academic Development Institute have announced the "2023 Busan Academic Improvement Basic Plan" to enhance students' academic achievement, marking the first year of "Character-based Academic Improvement."
This plan aims to improve teachers' expertise in instruction and assessment to support multifaceted academic adjustments and student academic improvement based on academic diagnosis and data.
Under the vision of "Solid Basics! Academic Growth! Growing Busan Education," the plan includes three main tasks and 14 detailed tasks: strengthening basic academic skills assurance, diagnosis and data-based adjustment, and field-centered support for instruction and assessment.
In particular, the plan focuses on implementing the Busan-type Academic Achievement Assessment and operating the Busan Academic Support System (BASS) to support basic academic skills.
The Busan Academic Development Institute will conduct the "Busan-type Academic Achievement Assessment" for the first time targeting first-year middle school students in September and October this year. The assessment will be conducted in Korean, Mathematics, and English subjects using a computer-based testing (CBT) method.
Based on the assessment results, individualized feedback materials will be provided to support self-directed learning. This will lead to improvements in teaching and learning methods and be reflected in educational policy formulation to reduce academic disparities between regions, thereby enhancing the curriculum's substance.
Additionally, the "Customized Academic Achievement Autonomous Assessment," which has been conducted since last year, will be expanded to include 5th and 6th graders in elementary school, 3rd-year middle school students, and 1st and 2nd-year high school students. Elementary and middle school subjects include Korean, Mathematics, English, Social Studies, and Science, while high school subjects include Korean, Mathematics, and English.
Based on accumulated assessment data, the Busan Academic Support System (BASS) will be operated to diagnose and analyze students' achievement levels and provide customized learning adjustment plans.
The Busan Academic Support System (BASS) is a customized learning support and management system that recommends AI-generated questions, question explanations, and courses tailored to students' levels based on the results of the customized academic achievement autonomous assessment.
This system, the first of its kind nationwide, operates as a "Learning Management System (LMS)" that provides step-by-step services including diagnosis and analysis of students' achievement levels, customized learning, and evaluation and feedback, supporting continuous academic improvement for students.
Furthermore, field-centered instruction and assessment support are provided to ensure students' academic skills improve within classes. To enhance teachers' expertise, a pool of personnel related to instruction and assessment is established, and various training sessions, research competitions, and development and distribution of classroom improvement materials are conducted.
Among these efforts, a "Student-led Learning-centered Instruction Support Group" composed of about 100 elementary, middle, and high school teachers will be operated. They will support school sites through instruction coaching, consulting, instructional sharing relays, and material development.
Also, a "Student Assessment Field Support Group" consisting of about 150 elementary, middle, and high school teachers will be operated to strengthen teachers' assessment expertise and support fieldwork.
Lee Sang-yul, Director of the Busan Academic Development Institute, said, "This year marks the first year of 'Character-based Academic Improvement.' Based on this plan, we will diagnose students' academic levels and provide corrective education according to assessment results to support individual student growth and potential development."
