Return Match After 7 Months at Genesis Invitational
The comeback partner for the "Golf Emperor" Tiger Woods (USA) has been decided.
The PGA Tour announced on the 14th (local time) that "Woods will play alongside Rory McIlroy (Northern Ireland) and Justin Thomas (USA) in the first and second rounds of the Genesis Invitational." Woods has endured difficult days undergoing treatment and rehabilitation since his traffic accident in 2021, and has not participated in any official tournaments, including PGA Tour events, since The Open last July. This tournament marks his return to the field after seven months.
At the official press conference, Woods expressed strong determination, saying, "I will compete to win." Woods stated, "If I thought I couldn't win against the players here, I wouldn't have entered," and confidently added, "Though I was quite rusty, I have shaken off the rust." In December last year, Woods participated in the two-day event PNC Championship with his son Charlie, but due to leg discomfort, he played using a cart.
Woods explained his physical condition, saying, "My leg is better than last year. Each day is tough, but I am gradually gaining strength," and "I have improved a lot over the past few months." He continued, "The time will soon come when I can no longer compete for wins, but it is too early for me to just serve as an ambassador at tournaments," emphasizing, "That is not in my DNA. I came to win."
