Dubbed 'Refugee Camp' During the World Cup
The 'mobile accommodations' used for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, which had been continuously criticized for poor convenience, have been given a chance to restore their reputation. They have been donated to T?rkiye, which suffered from a major earthquake.
According to local Qatari media such as the 'Qatar Tribune' on the 12th (local time), the Qatari government plans to send about 10,000 mobile accommodation units used during the World Cup to T?rkiye.
The mobile accommodations are living facilities set up inside containers, equipped with wardrobes, refrigerators, desks, air conditioners, beds, fans, and more. During the last Qatar World Cup, they were established as tourist lodging facilities under the name 'Fan Village.'

Thanks to their exterior designed to fit container standards, they are easy to transport by trains, ships, and other means, allowing for rapid delivery to T?rkiye. According to foreign media reports, a ship carrying 350 mobile accommodation units has already departed for a Turkish port.
Attention is focused on whether the mobile accommodations can regain their honor in light of the T?rkiye earthquake. The Fan Village, made up of these mobile accommodations, was criticized as a 'refugee camp' by tourists during the last Qatar World Cup.
In November last year, the British media outlet 'The Guardian' quoted evaluations from tourists who actually stayed in the Fan Village, reporting opinions such as "When the air conditioner is on, it makes a noise like a fighter jet taking off" and "The bed is as hard as a rock." The high lodging fee of over $200 (about 250,000 KRW) per night was also pointed out as a problem despite the poor facilities.
However, even as temporary shelters, they can be very useful for disaster victims who have lost their homes right now. The mobile accommodations are also equipped with basic hygiene facilities such as toilets and simple shower facilities.
