[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seok-jin, Legal Affairs Specialist] The High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit (PCC) has appointed attorney Song Chang-jin (52, Judicial Research and Training Institute class 33), a former prosecutor specializing in special investigations, as chief prosecutor.

The PCC announced on the 14th that attorney Song, who is currently serving as the lead attorney at the law firm Inwol, has been appointed as chief prosecutor effective the 17th.

Born in Daegu, attorney Song graduated from Daegu Yeongjin High School and Seoul National University with a degree in French Language and Literature. In 2011, he completed a Master of Laws (LL.M) program at the University of Washington School of Law in the United States.

After completing the Judicial Research and Training Institute, Song was commissioned as a prosecutor at Suwon District Prosecutors' Office in 2004. He served as a special investigations prosecutor at the Haenam branch of Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office, Daegu District Prosecutors' Office, and Cheongju District Prosecutors' Office.

In 2011, he also worked at the Savings Bank Joint Investigation Unit under the Supreme Prosecutors' Office's Central Investigation Department. Subsequently, he served in the special investigations divisions of Cheongju District Prosecutors' Office, the Advanced Crime Investigation Division 1 and Special Investigation Division 1 of Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, and the special investigation team for the Sung Wan-jong list, before opening his own law practice in 2016.

After announcing the recruitment for chief prosecutors in December last year, the PCC conducted a first round of document screening and a second round of interviews, and on the 6th of last month held a personnel committee meeting to recommend attorney Song as a chief prosecutor candidate to President Yoon Seok-youl. The president recently completed the approval process.

Attorney Song is expected to take over as head of Investigation Division 2, which became vacant after Chief Prosecutor Kim Soo-jung resigned for personal reasons.

With this appointment, the PCC, which has a total of 25 authorized prosecutors, now has 22 members, including Director Kim Jin-wook, Deputy Director Yeo Woon-guk, seven chief prosecutors, and 13 regular prosecutors.
