[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 13th that Choi Sangho, a professor in the Vocal Music Department at the Korea National University of Arts (age 62), has been appointed as the director and artistic director of the National Opera Foundation. The new director's term will last for three years until February 12, 2026.
Choi Sangho, the new director, graduated from the Vocal Music Department at Yonsei University College of Music and completed his master's degree at the Karlsruhe University of Music in Germany. From 1990 to 2002, he worked as a resident soloist at the Frankfurt Oder Theater (Kleist Theater), Kassel State Theater, and Leipzig Opera House in Germany.
Having gained diverse experience in Germany, the center of world opera, he was appointed as a professor in the Vocal Music Department at the Korea National University of Arts in 2000. Over 23 years, he has served as the vice dean of the College of Music, director of academic affairs, and head of the Vocal Music Department, dedicating himself to nurturing future talents.
A Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism official stated, “The driving force behind the development of opera in Korea is the National Opera Foundation, which produces various operas including original works, fosters talent, and promotes international exchange. The new director is expected to contribute to the artistic development and international stature of the National Opera Foundation based on his experience and knowledge gained on world-class opera stages and his expertise in training emerging musicians at the Korea National University of Arts.”
