Except for 2021, when no representative festival was selected due to COVID-19, the county achieved the remarkable feat of being selected for five consecutive times from 2018 to 2020, and in 2022.
Last September, after a three-year wait following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Sangsa Flower Festival was held for 10 days, attracting 403,028 tourists according to measuring instruments, and was held successfully amid tremendous popularity, recording a maximum daily visitor count of 74,520.
With this selection as a representative festival, the county secured 20 million won in provincial funds that can be used for festival development, as well as gaining external promotional effects, thus catching two birds with one stone.
This year marks the 23rd Yeonggwang Bulgapsan Sangsa Flower Festival, which is scheduled to be held for 10 days from September 15 to 24.
The county aims to attract 600,000 tourists by implementing a hybrid festival combining online and offline content, realizing an eco-friendly festival using reusable containers and electronic leaflets, archiving memorable festivals, enhancing transportation convenience, expanding convenience facilities such as mobile toilets, and expanding the entire nighttime scenery, with the goal of advancing beyond a Jeollanam-do representative festival to become a Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism representative festival.
A county official said, “It was regrettable that the local atmosphere was depressed due to the inability to hold the festival for the past three years because of COVID-19, but thanks to the tireless efforts of the festival promotion committee and staff who put their heads together to prepare for the festival despite the long hiatus, we were able to be selected as a representative festival.”
He added, “We will thoroughly prepare from now on to ensure the festival is successfully held this year as well and maintain its high status.”
