[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Tae-min] POSCO Engineering & Construction has introduced a high-floor hydrogen electric bus, a type of express bus, as a commuter bus for employees as part of its carbon neutrality efforts.
In 2021, POSCO Engineering & Construction became the first company in the domestic construction industry to announce its carbon neutrality strategy, "2050 Carbon Negative." Since then, it has been carrying out various activities such as operating pilot sites for greenhouse gas reduction, establishing a big data-based greenhouse gas management system, and strengthening support for reducing greenhouse gases in the supply chain.
As part of these efforts, the first high-floor hydrogen electric bus commercialized domestically will be introduced as an employee commuter bus starting this month. The company plans to sequentially expand the application to a total of 20 hydrogen electric commuter buses by the end of this year.
One hydrogen electric bus can purify 4.863 kg of air per kilometer traveled. POSCO Engineering & Construction expects that operating 20 hydrogen electric commuter buses will purify approximately 5,880 tons of air annually and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buses by about 41% compared to last year.
In addition, last year, POSCO Engineering & Construction was recognized by the global climate change response evaluation organization CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) for its excellence in carbon management activities and climate change response capabilities, including ▲establishing a leading carbon neutrality strategy ▲expanding low-carbon business ▲developing low-carbon construction methods and technologies ▲operating a carbon neutrality council with stakeholders (P-GRT, POSCO E&C Green Round Table), earning the `Leadership Grade (Leadership, A-)` awarded to companies responding to climate change.
Also, on the 10th, the company received the `Special Carbon Management Award` at the ‘Climate Change Response and Water Management Excellence Awards (2022 CDP Korea Awards)’ hosted by CDP. CDP is a global climate change response evaluation organization that assesses companies' efforts and achievements in managing risks and opportunities related to climate change, carbon neutrality strategies, and carbon reduction.
A POSCO Engineering & Construction official stated, “Under the management philosophy of corporate citizenship that grows together, the company will continue to establish and implement eco-friendly and carbon neutrality strategies to position itself as a global ESG leading company.”
