SK Chemicals Wins ESG Awards for Climate Change Response and Water Resource Protection

[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] SK Chemicals has been recognized for its efforts in climate change response and water resource protection by major global ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) evaluation institutions.

SK Chemicals announced on the 10th that it received the Carbon Management Sector Honors Award and the Water Resource Sector Special Award at the ‘2022 CDP Climate Change Response and Water Management Excellence Awards Ceremony.’ Kim Kidong, Head of Management Support Division at SK Chemicals, attended the ceremony held at the Glad Hotel Bloom Hall in Yeouido, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, to receive the awards.

According to the international Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), SK Chemicals received an A- grade in the climate change response category and a B- grade in the water resource management category last year. Established in 2000 in the UK, CDP is a global initiative that requests disclosure of environmental management information related to climate change, water security, biodiversity, and more from major listed and unlisted companies. It serves as a global platform for environmental information disclosed by over 90 countries and is used as an environmental data source by major ESG evaluation institutions such as Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI).

SK Chemicals analyzed that the positive evaluation factors included establishing a 2040 Carbon Neutral (Net Zero) strategy, publishing the first Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) report, and continuously improving water quality and waste management activities such as obtaining Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) certification.

Kim Kidong, Head of Management Support Division at SK Chemicals, said, “We are pleased to have our efforts for eco-friendly management recognized by CDP following the Korea ESG Standards Institute and MSCI. We will strengthen ESG management for sustainable growth this year as well.”

Meanwhile, at the awards ceremony held that day, SK Discovery also received a special award in the carbon management category.
