Hyundai Motor Group Ranks No.1 for Two Consecutive Years in U.S. JD Power Durability Quality Study

[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Hyundai Motor Group has achieved first place for two consecutive years among automotive groups in the United States' most prestigious quality survey.

Hyundai Motor Group announced that it achieved the best overall score among 16 global automotive groups in the '2023 Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS)' released on the 9th (local time) by the U.S. market research firm J.D. Power.

Among a total of 31 brands, Genesis ranked 2nd (144 points), Kia 3rd (152 points), and Hyundai Motor 8th (170 points), all placing in the top tier.

In particular, Kia won the 'Best Mass Market Brand Award' by ranking first among mass market brands for three consecutive years. Genesis ranked 2nd among 13 luxury brands, and Hyundai Motor ranked 6th among 18 mass market brands.

As a result, Hyundai Motor Group recorded the lowest average score of 160 points among the 16 global automotive groups. A lower score indicates higher quality satisfaction. Hyundai Motor Group surpassed Toyota (163 points) and General Motors (165 points).

By vehicle type, ▲Kia K3 ranked first in the compact car segment, ▲Kia K5 in the mid-size car segment, and ▲Kia Sportage in the compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment. Following them, ▲Hyundai Motor Avante received an excellent quality award in the compact car segment, ▲Hyundai Motor Santa Fe in the mid-size SUV segment, ▲Kia Sorento in the upper mid-size SUV segment, and ▲Kia Carnival in the minivan segment.

The Vehicle Dependability Study surveys customers who have owned their vehicles for three years, assessing satisfaction with 184 durability-related items and calculating the number of problems per 100 vehicles. This year’s study covered a total of 31 brands, 227 models, and 30,062 vehicles sold in the U.S. from July 2019 to February 2020.

Hyundai Motor Group achieved excellent results in both the Initial Quality Study (IQS) and the Vehicle Dependability Study, which are considered the two major benchmarks for automotive quality evaluation. Hyundai Motor stated that this is expected to contribute to enhancing brand image and expanding sales in the future.

A Hyundai Motor Group official said, "The reason Hyundai Motor Group achieved the best durability quality among global automotive groups is due to relentless efforts across all departments to improve quality," adding, "We will continue to strive to maintain quality going forward."
