[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] SK Inc. C&C announced on the 10th that it has won the 'Carbon Management Sector Honors' in the industrial materials category at the '2022 CDP Korea Awards Ceremony' for the second consecutive year.
CDP is an international non-profit organization that requests management information related to responses to environmental issues such as climate change, water, and forest resources from major companies worldwide. The number of companies responding to CDP reaches 19,000.
Along with DJSI (Dow Jones Sustainability Index), it is recognized as an authoritative sustainability evaluation institution and ranks first in the world in terms of evaluation reliability. Based on the collected information, CDP publishes an annual report that serves as an investment guideline for domestic and international financial institutions.
Every year, companies disclose their greenhouse gas emissions, risks and opportunities due to climate change, and carbon management strategies through CDP. CDP conducts evaluations related to global environmental issues such as climate change and water resource management and assigns a total of eight grades, including Leadership A, Leadership A-, Management B, and Management B- based on the results.
SK C&C was recognized for various eco-friendly improvement activities to solve climate change issues and received 'Leadership A-' for the second consecutive year following last year. In this year's climate change response evaluation, 40 companies including SK Hynix, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and Shinhan Financial Group were included in the leadership list.
Following the industry's first 'RE100 membership' in 2020, SK C&C joined the 'Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)' last year and is engaging in 'Net Zero' activities to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
In June 2021, SK C&C set 2040, ten years ahead of the global carbon neutrality target year 2050, as the 'Net Zero' achievement year and announced the 'Net Zero Execution Roadmap.' Since then, it has been carrying out various activities such as ▲ securing solar power self-generation facilities and purchasing green premiums ▲ implementing eco-friendly data centers ▲ disclosing reports based on the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations ▲ acquiring global environmental management system (ISO14001) certification ▲ reducing carbon emissions in daily life through the social value practice mobile app ‘Haenggarae (幸加來).’
Kim Seonghan, head of ESG at SK C&C, said, “We plan to strengthen reduction activities and discover eco-friendly business models by industry based on digital capabilities so that SK C&C’s Net Zero activities can become a model case for domestic climate change response.”
