Installation of Smart Pergola, Cooling Fog, Heated Chairs, and Fine Dust Traffic Lights
175 million KRW invested... Completion in May
Urban green resting place reborn with no discomfort even in cold waves and heatwaves
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yongsan-gu is renovating Singye Historical Park (55 Singye-dong) into a smart park that withstands cold waves and heatwaves.
Singye Historical Park is an urban park (15,000㎡) adjacent to Danggogae Martyrdom Site (139-26 Cheongpa-ro). It is located between Yongsan Dream Tree Complex Town (former Yongsan-gu Office) intersection and Yongsan Electronics Market.
The district is investing 175 million KRW to install ▲smart cooling fog ▲smart pergola ▲smart heated chairs ▲fine dust traffic lights within the park by May this year.
The smart cooling fog is a cooling system that detects the human body when residents walk along the trail and sprays fine water particles. It can lower the surrounding temperature by about 5℃.
The smart pergola is equipped with an air curtain, external person detection sensors, heating and cooling devices, and a remote control system to protect against fine dust, cold waves, and heatwaves.
The smart heated chairs with built-in temperature controllers automatically adjust seat temperature to be cool on hot days and warm on cold days. The fine dust traffic lights receive data from nearby monitoring stations and display fine dust information in real time. This is expected to help residents decide their outdoor activity levels based on air quality.
The district plans to complete the design service by February, select a construction company in March, and finish construction before the heatwave arrives.
Kim Seon-su, Acting Mayor of the district, said, “Green spaces near residences and workplaces are precious resting places where people can take a short breath in daily life. We will use digital technology to ensure residents can visit the park comfortably and conveniently throughout the four seasons.”
The district will invest about 36 million KRW to install 15 smart heated chairs in the area by the end of the year. Installation sites include relatively high-usage places such as Sancheon-dong Village Yard, Sinchang-dong Street Rest Area, Saenara Children’s Park, Itaewon Children’s Park, Seobinggo Neighborhood Park, Banpo Green Space, and Seongchon Green Space.
Jung-gu Supports 15 Million KRW for “Our Neighborhood Alley One-Hand Span Garden” Contest Project
Applications accepted in person or by mail at the Parks and Greenery Division from February 17 to 23
2022 Sindang-dong Ant Alley One-Hand Span Garden Project Brightened Alleys and Strengthened Neighborly Bonds
Seoul’s Jung-gu (Mayor Kim Gil-seong) is promoting the “Our Neighborhood Alley One-Hand Span Garden” contest project. Teams that cultivate flowers and trees in alley vacant lots will be selected and provided with 15 million KRW in project funds.
This project encourages local residents to cooperate to make the neighborhood scenery greener and more pleasant, while also strengthening neighborly relationships.
Social enterprises, non-profit corporations, non-profit private organizations, and non-profit organizations based in Seoul are eligible to apply. Application forms can be downloaded from the Jung-gu website and submitted in person or by mail to the Jung-gu Office Parks and Greenery Division between February 17 and 23. For inquiries about applications, contact the Garden Leisure Team of the Parks and Greenery Division.
Last year, the “Mini Love Cooperative” was selected as the project executor and created a one-hand span garden in the ‘Ant Alley’ area of Sindang-dong. Ant Alley got its name because the alley is narrow and complex like an ant tunnel. Around the flower beds neglected on the main alley, trash had accumulated, and about 100 residents joined forces to improve this.
On days when they pulled weeds and decorated the garden, the neighborhood had a festive atmosphere. People shared food and stories, creating a scene of harmony.
By planting flowers and trees suitable for the seasons and creating a mini spring, the small garden gradually took shape. They also invited local residents and held companion plant-making events.
With the one-hand span garden in place, the alley’s atmosphere changed dramatically. The alley, which had been littered with trash, became noticeably cleaner, and birds often came to the mini spring to quench their thirst. Over time, this place became a ‘companion garden’ offering rest and comfort to Sindang-dong residents. In November, it was honored as an excellent case of the Seoul Green City Award and received the ‘Sprout Award’ from the Seoul Mayor.
Kim Gil-seong, Mayor of Jung-gu, said, “Jung-gu is striving to expand green spaces so that forests, people, and buildings can breathe harmoniously. We hope many residents participate in the one-hand span garden project, as it will brighten alleys and provide opportunities to strengthen neighborly ties.”
