Ministry of Gender Equality to Launch Pilot Project Supporting Stalking Victims in April... Calls for Implementing Agencies

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] On the 8th, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced that it is recruiting violence victim support organizations to carry out new projects supporting stalking victims this year.

The projects open for application include three categories: emergency housing support, rental housing support, and treatment recovery programs.

This pilot project is part of the national agenda to strengthen protection and support for victims of the five major types of violence (power-based sexual crimes, digital sexual crimes, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking crimes). The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family is promoting related projects in accordance with the "Act on the Prevention of Stalking and Protection of Victims" (Stalking Victim Protection Act), enacted last January.

First, emergency housing support and rental housing support will provide more than 80 units nationwide using temporary shelters and rental housing from the Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH). Residents can live individually in single rooms.

Safety equipment will be installed in the housing support facilities, and in cooperation with the police, victims admitted to the facilities will be safely protected.

The treatment recovery program will provide step-by-step psychological stabilization to support the emotional recovery of victims.

Within this month, the Ministry plans to finalize the selection of project implementing organizations through recommendations from metropolitan and provincial governments for related organizations such as the Women's Emergency Call 1366 Center, domestic violence and sexual violence counseling centers, and Sunflower Centers, and the pilot project is scheduled to begin in April.

Organizations wishing to participate in the project should submit an application to the relevant city or province.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family will select specialized organizations by considering regional population size and stalking counseling performance among the recommended organizations through independent evaluations by each city and province.
