Ministry of Foreign Affairs Issues 'Special Travel Advisory' for 6 Provinces in Southeastern Turkiye

Foreign Minister Park Jin Holds Phone Call with Turkish Ambassador to Korea

[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] On the 6th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a 'Special Travel Advisory' for some areas in the southeastern region of Turkey where a large-scale earthquake occurred.


The affected areas include six provinces: Kahramanmara?, Malatya, Adıyaman, Osmaniye, Adana, and Hatay. These areas were previously under Travel Alert Level 1 (Travel Caution), but the level has been raised to 'Special Travel Advisory.'


The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "Aftershocks are continuing, so citizens currently staying in the affected areas should evacuate safely following the guidance of Turkish authorities, and those planning to travel there are advised to cancel or postpone their plans."

The Ministry will closely monitor the local situation in the affected areas and maintain the Special Travel Advisory until the risk situation is resolved.


Foreign Minister Park Jin expressed his sincere condolences regarding the strong earthquake during a phone call with Salih Murat Tamer, the Turkish Ambassador to Korea, and conveyed the Korean government's willingness to provide active support for prompt disaster recovery. Ambassador Tamer expressed gratitude for the swift humanitarian aid and dispatch of relief teams from the 'brother country' Korea.


Minister Park also requested the Turkish government’s attention and support for the safety of Korean nationals residing in the affected areas. Furthermore, they agreed to continue close communication regarding necessary matters for earthquake damage recovery.


Meanwhile, the earthquake that struck southeastern Turkey in the early morning of the 6th resulted in over 2,000 deaths. The magnitude of the earthquake was 7.8.
