[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Former professional basketball coach Kang Donghee has been brought to trial on charges of embezzling operating funds worth around 100 million won from a basketball school where he served as director.
On the 6th, the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office announced that Kang and four corporate officials of the basketball school were indicted without detention on charges of embezzlement and breach of trust in the course of their duties.
They are accused of personally using or diverting operating funds worth about 100 million won for purposes other than originally intended while jointly managing the basketball school corporation where Kang served as director from May to October 2018.
Earlier, the police received a related complaint in March 2021 and conducted an investigation by analyzing the corporation's financial transactions and fund flows, subsequently sending Kang and others to the prosecution in October of the same year.
Additionally, in January last year, the police received another complaint alleging that Kang embezzled 220 million won of corporate funds from another basketball school, and are investigating to verify the facts.
Kang was sentenced to 10 months in prison in 2013 for match-fixing by accepting 47 million won from brokers and fielding substitute players instead of starters, and was expelled from the KBL in September of the same year.
