"Low Salary and No Time to Meet Friends"… Complaints of a US Congressman with a 200 Million Won Annual Income

'Female Trump' Representative Marjorie Green
Controversy Over Misinformation, Conspiracy Theories, and Offensive Remarks
"Get a Part-Time Job or Quit," Netizens Criticize

Marjorie Taylor Greene, a far-right U.S. Congresswoman from Georgia (Republican), nicknamed the "Trump in High Heels," has come under fire for complaining that her "salary is too low."

According to the British newspaper The Independent on the 5th (local time), Greene recently appeared on journalist Glenn Greenwald's podcast and said, "Life has become miserable since becoming a congresswoman." She added, "Before coming here (to Congress), I earned much more money. Since being elected, I have lost money," and "I don't enjoy (life as a congresswoman), so I don't think it's a happy life. I am devoted because I have convictions here." The annual salary for U.S. Senators and Representatives is known to be $174,000 (approximately 217.67 million KRW).

Greene also complained about the excessively long working hours as a congresswoman. She said, "Due to the nature of the job, all Senators and Representatives spend too much time in Washington," adding, "I can't go home to Georgia to be with my family or friends. This job is practically year-round." She also added, "Since Representatives run for election every two years, they are campaigning almost all the time."

Greene was first elected as a Republican Representative for Georgia's 14th congressional district in November 2020. Before entering politics, she inherited and ran her father's company and worked as a local businesswoman operating a CrossFit gym. She expressed her intention to participate in politics since the 2016 Republican presidential primary and is considered a prominent 'pro-Trump' figure. She has been criticized for spreading misinformation, conspiracy theories, and making offensive remarks.

Previously, she was expelled from a standing committee after supporting claims of election fraud in the U.S. presidential election and spreading far-right conspiracy theories about the 9/11 attacks. Due to her remarks involving racism, anti-Semitism, and anti-Islam, she is nicknamed the "female Trump." In this interview, she also revealed that she is bothered by people approaching her in public places and spouting nonsense, saying, "People who say they have seen me online or in the news come up to me and say ridiculous things."

However, her remarks were immediately criticized on social media. One Twitter user criticized her, saying, "Becoming a congressperson is not about the money. And you earn more money than most voters. If you don't like your life and job, then stop running for office." Other responses followed with hashtags like #StopWhining, saying, "If this job isn't comfortable for you, step down freely," and "If you can't serve the Constitution and the people, get a part-time job or just quit."
