[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] Ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, a poll revealed that the majority of voters do not want a rematch between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. If such a rematch occurs, most voters said they would be dissatisfied or angry regardless of who wins. They preferred other candidates to run for president.
According to a poll released on the 5th (local time) by The Washington Post (WP) and ABC News, 58% of Democratic supporters and Democratic-leaning independents said they preferred someone other than President Biden as the Democratic nominee for the next presidential election. This figure far exceeds the 31% who preferred President Biden.
Additionally, 49% of Republican supporters and Republican-leaning independents said they wanted a candidate other than former President Trump. Those who preferred Trump accounted for 44%.
In this survey, more than six out of ten respondents said they would be angry (30%) or dissatisfied (32%) if President Biden succeeded in winning a second term. Only 7% said they would be enthusiastic about Biden's victory. Similar responses were given regarding former President Trump's potential re-election. Thirty-six percent said they would be angry, 20% dissatisfied, and 17% enthusiastic.
WP reported, "While Biden and Trump may have set record vote counts in the last election, at this early stage ahead of the next presidential election, Americans show little enthusiasm for their rematch," adding, "Most Americans would be dissatisfied or angry no matter which of the two wins." The survey was conducted from the 27th of last month to the 1st of this month, targeting 1,003 registered U.S. voters.
In a hypothetical matchup between President Biden and former President Trump, 48% of respondents supported Trump. This is higher than Biden's support at 45%, but still within the margin of error (±3.5 percentage points).
Former President Trump has already officially declared his candidacy for the 2024 election. President Biden has not yet made an official announcement. Opposition within the Democratic Party to Biden's re-election bid has not yet been confirmed. Meanwhile, Trump will have to face several competitors, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
In this survey, President Biden's job approval rating remained sluggish at 42%. Evaluations of economic issues were similar to early November last year, with 37% approval and 58% disapproval.
WP analyzed that Americans view the recent classified documents leak cases involving Biden and Trump differently. Nearly half of voters (48%) saw Biden's case as "wrong but unintentional," while only 27% said it was "intentional and illegal." In contrast, 45% viewed Trump's case as "intentional and illegal," and 29% as "wrong but unintentional."
